Sea2Sea2007 - chat here if you rode it

Postby GazRideGuide on Tue Oct 16, 2007 9:54 am

What an utter blast! There is way too much to say about the ride. I'm gonna let you guys say most of it - for me it was a micro-universe - 3 days of living in a new world with wonderful people who I adored, riding amazing routes with people that were pushing themselves to extremes. Can we just get back on the bus and head out into Europe together. Perfect!

Now tell me what the ride was like for you?

Hi everyone!

The sheer exhilaration of having completed the sea2sea (ive decided to ignore the fact that i cheated on the 2-3 miles of the climb to hartside by taking the cab up!!) and the absolutely wonderful time we had the last 3 days somehow got me to office this morning in unbelievable good spirits for a monday morning! and of course i had to come and gloat!!
Injury got pushed back (hurrah for neurofen and deep heat balm!!) mostly thanks to the super encouragement received from everyone that kept me going.

Craz, fully agree, LOADS and loads of training reqd - just for the record it was 10 miles on the exercycle TWICE a week (for the last 2 weeks anyway, heh heh heh!! :-D)You guys were all ace and unbelievably patient!! Thanks a ton for a most memorable trip!!
Hopefully, next time ill be able to stay up and chat and not simply crash into my bunk every evening!!

Would love to catch up soon...next wild ride maybe :-)

All the best!!

MESSAGE FROM ALAN DRIVER

Well what can I say, what a great weekend that was. Amazing ride with fantastic company. It was tough at times, both mentally and physically, but well worth it.

A big thanks to those who organised it!

Totals from the spedo:

Total distance: 141.4 miles
Total time: 22.10.56
Max Speed: 42.1 mph
Average Speed: 6.4mph
Total ascent: ~18,000ft
Total Calories burnt: 12,745

I think the total time and average speed are wrong, because I forgot to pause it when we stopped a couple of times.

Alice- I think the calendar is a great idea, the top quote has to be the one from Phil whilst on the bridge.

Hope to see you all again on future rides!

Hi All

It's Jonathan 'the hill climber' Geldard here. Having finally caught up on some sleep i've finally summoned up the energy to post a few comments.
Despite my crashes what a great ride and what a superb bunch of people to ride with. Will definitely be hoping to join you for some other rides next year. I am hoping they dont clash with some other rides i have planned because it would be a very tough decision which to do. I will have to improve my off roading skills however especially going down hill either that or get some better brakes. Well what else can I say that hasnt already been said apart from hope to see yopu all again on another ride.

Jonathan

Fun while it lasted!!!!!!!!!

Postby joanne68 on Tue Oct 16, 2007 8:24 pm

Really enjoyed the experience while it lasted!!!

I have seen two Orthopaedic Surgeon's today and got two different opinions.

Opinion 1 - cartilage
Opinion 2 - Ilio-tibial banding syndrome

I prefer the first as it is easily treated. The second requires physio, injections etc.

I am going to have an urgent MRI which should help decide the way forward.

I plan to do the Four Churches, Amsterslam and C2C next year.
Craz - promise I won't cry like a baby

I had an excellent and unforgettable time. The event was very well organised and can't wait for next year!!!

"Awesome" as the Kiwis say and I am definitely up for more next year, particularly fancy the Hdrian's wall or C2C again or both as long as it is still ok to be boring and go to bed early and not consume alcohol - cannot cycle well and party!! Loved meeting you all and was inspired by a lot of what I saw and heard over those few days.

Chapeau

Postby Andy Wills on Tue Oct 16, 2007 10:09 pm

Just arrived back from the Lake District. I was so sorry to have to dash away from the finish. I even missed out on hugs and kisses from one or two of you ( I'll get you next time)
I'm still buzzin from the whole experience. The way the whole group came together and supported each other was truely amazing.
The sea to sea is an epic ride which we can all be proud to have completed. I'd really want to thank you all for making it such a blast.

A big sorry to anybody kept awake by my warthog impressions, I promise the noises came from the top end of my body.

Observations, Need to get me some o'dem crazy Aldi Borat shorts. Carry more tools next time. Remember to remove spare under crackers from lining of shorts before putting them on. Make sure I book onto the next ride you guys are on.

I remain seriously in awe of the grit, determination and sheer balls you displayed getting up those hills.

As they say in French cycling circles, CHAPEAU ! :D Andy

Joanne,

You were an absolute star! I wanted you to stop cycling the day before you did when it was quite obvious that you'd suffered a torn muscle or similar. But no, you battled on and gave it your best shot. I think anyone that determined to finish the ride and in that much pain would have been overwhelmed so there's absolutely no need to promise anything!

Please keep us updated after the MRI scan. Fingers crossed for the lesser of the two evils and we hope to see you fit and raring to go sooner rather than later (but don't rush back onto the bike... take things slowly!!!) :)

Take care,
Craz.

Hi all

tried to register on the forum but I share an email with my missus who is already registered, so I send an email instead.

Yep, gotta say fantastic weekend really enjoyed it. Too many highlights to mention but for me here are a few

Most embarrassing moment - falling off my bike at the traffic lights in Keswick, those clip ins again!

Biggest achievement - getting changed in my bunk!

Best urban legend - Craz getting ready the night before and jumping out of bed ready the next morning. I tried it and it works.

Hardest hill - the stairs on the bus after a days riding.

Engineering question - just how do they build roads up those hills?

The old coach road - wow.

Stunning ride fact - the weight of Andys (ride guide) tool box and bike.

Fastest speed - 43.4 mph

Slowest speed - backwards on the old coach road (would not have missed it though)

Best scenery - the fantastic nay magnificent Stadium of Light!

What a weekend, England won, the Rhinos won, the rugby boys won and a classic ride.

I am not sure the whole thing has really sunk in yet (It is after all only Wednesday!) Had an awesome time and even enjoyed some of the uphills (okay so that is probably a lie but I am glad I did them). There is some stuff that I would never have even tried to ride before so big thanks to everyone who helped me get to the top of the hard bits so I could fly down the steep bits!

Special thanks to the offroad team on day 2 especially Matt (who through his sparing use of the truth, bad memory of uphills and Lama spotting managed to get us though a right tough day of riding) and Sian (Who walked up the last hill too making me feel so much better about being knackered!).

I didn't get to drive at Silverstone on Monday (as expected) but did cycle 2 and a half laps around the circuit taking pictures!

You were all great and I look forward to riding with you all again.

It worked, didn't it? 8) The downhill at the quarry was completely worth the pain!

Seriously, riding with a superb bunch of people made the job easy and pleasureable. There are so many memories from this trip (like the route profile - I hear some of you cry!), it's impossible to say what was the best - it was all good! I was so tempted to turn around when we got to the end. Sorry I missed some of you go but then again we all have lives to go back to! A week after the ride PCD turns into PCR (Post Cycle Realisation) - the thoughts always start with ...'this time last week we were...'

I hope to ride with all of you again sometime - meanwhile please keep in touch!

 i feel i must clarify my quote from top o viaduct, i was looking down onto the tree tops when the fear of hights quite overwelmed me with a mixture of thinking like- after this its back to work- or if i jumped off here would i survive or is my imagination runing riot seeing my self hurtling southward to yonder branches and maybee i would have this amazing dramatic break fall you could share with the world but proberbly ultimatly hard ground shocking hammer contact, all i could think of saying within ear shot of Alice was,- 'well i think ill just stand here and toss myself off'
phil.c
ps, happy to be back at work sharing n caring for those long haired trolls
n glad i didnt toss myself off afterall.cheers luv u all.
