Training

If you haven’t started training yet (by which I mean either getting out on the bikes or getting down to the gym a couple of times a week) then now is the time to start! The weather seems to have picked up lately and hopefully it will stay that way for a few weeks to come. If you’ve simply been heading to the gym, perhaps it’s time to beg/borrow/steal a bike, dust it down and then get out on it and introduce the seat to your bums :)

As a very rough guide, I would be hoping that you can complete the following distances at least once a week to best prepare yourselves. Don’t worry if you don’t think that this is possible – I promise you that we’ll get you to Amsterdam and back no matter what! But if you put the effort in now, your trip will be a much more comfortable one!

Code: Select all
Weeks to go:                 Miles to ride:

14                                      6-10

12                                      8-12

10                                     10-14

8                                      15-20

6                                      20-25

4                                      25-30

2                                         30+

0                                         60+ :D (scary huh?!)

If you like, you can record your weekly mileage here for others to see. It may encourage the other riders to start their training, or reassure them that the mileage they're managing is adequate!

Well, I'm going to be the first to record my mileage then - not that anybody appears to read this forum, but I'm actually quite impressed with myself, so I'll stick it on as a pat on the back for myself  . Managed 80miles on the bike this week, after hardly any rides up to now. The longest single one was only 30miles, but 80 is still more than I've ever cycled in a week in my life!!! :P Didn't even feel particularly hard work, the worst bit was fitting it in round job, placement and the piles of college work the are throwing at us now the course is coming to an end...

Average speed is still fairly abysmal, and I suspect some of you out there are probably doing 80miles a day, but still, I think it's not bad going at all - only problem will be to keep it up! :?

How's everybody else doing?

37 off road is probably the equivalent of about twice that on road though, so that's loads! Managed 3 measly miles to the bike shop yesterday, which is admittedly on top of a rather nasty hill, but my legs were killing me... Think the 80 are catching up with me... :?
