Latex innertubes

Postby adriver on Sun Feb 03, 2008 5:21 pm

Having just had 3 punctures over 16 miles i want some more resistant innertubes. I know the slime filled ones are quite good, but there is a new contender, latex. Anyone tried these?

Can't say that I've ever used them as they're quite expensive, but found this:

Latex inner tubes are lighter, and weight-for-weight, more puncture resistant. They are also said to be 'faster'. On the downside, they are more expensive than the butyl rubber option, and do 'breathe', so you will lose a certain amount of pressure overnight - so you may well need to check your tyre pressures daily. Latex tubes are easier to repair as well. But as they are generally made for competition, they are often very light, so that failiures are often irrepairable. A third option exists: butilised latex tube, which breath less, and retain many of the advantages of latex, with the convenience of butyl.

For what it's worth, I use puncture resistant tyres with the slime filled inner tubes but also opt for having the slime guard layer inbetween the two aswell!!

I've not had a puncture for over 2 years (touch wood).
