Ride the Beast?

Postby John Berry on Sat Oct 27, 2007 4:58 pm

Hey there you guys I have a question for you

Does anyone out there want to ride the Beast?

What's the beast you may be wondering? It is a 110 mile ride around Co. Durham. It's a little bit hilly, rides along the highest road in England and the aim is to ride it in a day. Hence I have dubbed it the Beast.

Still interested? I intend doing this ride on or round about 12 July 2008 as the days will be long and wondered if anyone else fancied a trip out. A start time of approx 7 or 8am. The route takes in Rookhope and then some. It follows the National Byway and maps are available from their site or failing that I can photocopy my map for you.

If we do it we could get t-shirts printed which say "I did it Byway" geddit.

Hi John.

That sounds ace, although it's perilously close to both of the Amsterdam rides

I also want to do the Sea2Sea in a day next year :)
Craz.

Why not join us for a cycle ride for charity?!

Hi Craz

Wow the C2C in a day! My eyes are watering now just thinking about that..but keep me posted. :D

The 12 July 2008 is not set in stone and to be honest I don't even know if I can do the Beast in a day but I want to find out! The first 12 miles are along old railway paths and gradully ascends 200m to Lydgatts Junction on the C2C then follows that until the Waskerley Way where it turns off and is mainly on minor roads. the pace I was aiming for was about 12 mph and then maintain that on the roads. it will take a while hence the early start time of about 8am then when darkness sets in at 10pm it gives us 14 hours with stops. If the pace can be quicker so be it but the aim was to plod a bit then see how I /we feel.

I was thinking of starting at Bearpark about .6 mile from the route, there is parking on my estate and then on the way back I can ring Sam to phone an order for the Chinese takeaway who deliver.

I intend to drive the route in the car to see what I/ we are playing with.

Hope you enjoyed the football on Sunday.

I'm interested - doing anything in a day is good for me becasue I don't need to take any time off work!

Put me down for a go at the beast.

I have no idea what shifts I will be working by then, but I'll try to fit it in.

I would like to get hold of the route as I might have a go at it sooner than July.

Wotto you guys.

Really chuffed the beast has some interest and I can send a photocopied map of the route to those interested, thankfully it fits on 1 page.

Next question is how do we exchange addresses without the everyone in Blightly ordering us pizzas! I will check if my profile has my email address on. Just a minute.

Ride the Beast?

It does. :D

So check out the email, send me your address and I will forward a map for your consideration.

I am continuing to ride in these wet months and am definitely getting better at falling off!

Like I said earlier the date of 12 July 2008 is not set in stone and it actually clashes with the Amsterslam. We can agree a mutually convenient date if it suits. The sun will shine any day we choose oops that's done it.

Keep in touch.

John :)
