Endurance Cycling Charity Event

Postby Curlypoo on Sat Sep 15, 2007 7:18 pm

Ok, so it's like this. I was sat here sipping my glass of Ribena and chomping on my second, no wait, my third curly wurly, and a thought occured to me. Is Noel Edmunds really a cyber-robot? I decided he's probably not, and then another thought occured to me.

What is stopping me attending all these wonderful charity events ? (and they are wonderful charity events because I know because I was one of the cyclists who endured 4 Churches 2006 in baltic monsoon conditions and came back a changed man having covered 141 miles in 48 hours).

My problem is time. I just aint got any. Ok, well I do have time, but it's taken up with the rest of my life (or more to the point, other peoples lives overspilling into mine). For me a weekend event is just too much.

I have an idea for a charity event - endurance cycling, available to all and taking just one day.

1. We secure a athletic track somewhere for 12 hours
2. We measure the lap (yeah, they probably have already done that)
3. People get sponsorship per lap to cycle round it
4. Hard core cyclists could do the full twelve hours, and soft namby-pamby, hanky-panky softies could turn up anytime and do as many laps as they could manage to suit.
5. The target is that we cover 10 million miles in 12 hours - (anticipated mileage total to be adjusted as needed)
6. We get the media there, and on the back of that, free refreshments provided by local companies wanting to help/get publicity.
7. Attendents (preferably not toilet attendants, well... unless they've washed their hands first cos I ain't dealing with no poopy poo person until they're clean) would count laps, and we'd have a big board saying that Craz and Gaz have done a million laps, and Rob unfortuantely slipped on his pedal and banged his shin on the first corner and is currently using up all of the first aid resources so please please please, nobody else have an accident, cos we're not covered by our insurance!!!
8. Partners who don't cycle must attend with nibbles, cakes, drinks and entertainment.

People could turn up for 10 mins, an hour, or even 12.... at the end there'd be a leaderboard for who did the most.

On the night - a big party in a local pub, everyone totally knackered.

The important bit for me.... I can go home to my lovely wife and babies, and then spend Sunday slumped miserable against a shopping trolly whilst I'm dragged through Sainsburys, unaware of which aisle I'm in and wishing that I hadn't gone on that blasted charity event the day before cos now my legs are killing me.

Sorry for the short post, I'm just a bit busy tonight.

Any comments welcome.

Best wishes to all,

Rob White

Fantastic!!!!

Although I'd be happier if we found a 400 metre (yes, they're 400 metres!) running track that was 80ft higher at one end than the other  Bet the new wembley can't do that!!

I think we should make this happen!!!

Why not join us for a cycle ride for charity?!

Thing I like about this idea is that I could get Jessica (aka my 10 year old) to join in, she'd absolutely love it. Could turn it into a fun day with bouncy castles etc, all raising cash in their different ways.

I wonder just how far we could actually cycle in 12 hours straight.... ? Average 10mph = 120 miles!!

Who would do the most? What would the combined mileage be? How many people would turn up for 12 hours, or just 1 hour to do their bit?
